Square footage prices are based on the total measured area including exterior walls, garages, decks, balconies, lanais, etc.

We are based out of Fairfax, VA and cover most of the core Washington, DC metropolitan region. If your building is located outside of the areas listed below, we still may be able to help, but a destination charge will apply. Please contact us for an estimate.

Castaway Building Measurements, a segment of Castaway Engineering, is a drafting and modeling service provider in Fairfax, VA specializing in as-built documentation, LiDAR scanning, and reality capture. Our team has over 10 years of experience generating detailed floor plans and CAD models for commercial and residential applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions. Reach out if we’ve left anything out!

What is the turn-around time for products?

Usually all products are ready three to four days after the building scan is performed. Large jobs may take a little longer, but we will let you know if that may be applicable to your job.

Does someone need to be present for the appointment?

As long as we have access to the property, we don’t need someone to be there. We will reach out to confirm if someone will be there or for access instructions.

How long does the measurement process take?

The LiDAR scanning process takes about 1 hour per 10,000 sqft of accessible area. Plan for a ~1500 sqft home to take about 15-30 minutes start to finish. Multiple levels and tight quarters may add some time.

Does the property need to be prepared in any way prior to the appointment?

Generally no special preparations need to be made to the property; furniture, appliances, and other objects can stay right where they are. We will open all doors including closets, pantries, bathrooms, etc. to ensure all interior and exterior wall thicknesses are documented. Any inaccessible rooms will not be included in the output products.

When will I receive the products and how are they delivered?

As soon as we compute the measured square feet, we will send you an invoice (usually 3-4 days after measurements are taken). Once the invoice is paid, we’ll send your products via email (or download link depending on size).
